Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Removal and Software Delete

DPF Removal (Manchester) is a solution which is becoming popular with drivers of diesel vehicles as manufacturer's are installing these components on modern diesel vehicles. Peugeot were one of the first vehicle manufacturer's to install a DPF (also called FAP Filter), on selected models only in 2002, Mercedes in 2004, BMW IN 2004 and Mazda in 2006, however were limited to a few models. Most of the vehicle manufacturer's started to install on most models from 2007.

What is a DPF

A DPF is a component which is a part of the exhaust system primarily designed and installed to remove soot particles and matter produced from the exhaust gas of diesel vehicles. When functioning at its optimum the DPF removes approximately 85% of soot particles, greatly lowering the emissions and pollution from diesel engines. The functions of a filter are similar to a catalytic convertor however it traps bigger exhaust gas particles. As you drive the black carbon or in the exhaust gas is absorbed and trapped by the filter. The accumulated soot is then burned off periodically in a process called regeneration.

Passive Regeneration

Passive Regeneration occurs during normal operation of the vehicle usually on motorways where the vehicle has the ability to reach high exhaust temperatures. Unfortunately if you are only doing short journeys passive regeneration will not occur and therefore manufacturer's have developed a system where the vehicles Engine Control Unit (ECU) will take over in a process called active regeneration.

Active Regeneration

Active regenerations are controlled by the vehicles Engine Control Unit (ECU). The vehicle's ECU measures the blockage level of the filter via the differential pressure sensor and the temperature of the filter using the temperature sensor. When it measures a pre-determined blockage level it will initiate active regeneration by increasing the exhaust temperature through fuel injection until it reaches the required temperature. The required temperature is of great importance because diesel particle matter will only burn when the DPF is above 600 degrees celsius. Active regeneration will not occur if both conditions are not met.

One of the major reasons why DPF's become blocked or fail is due to short journeys involving stop start driving and lack of motorway driving. During these driving conditions the DPF will not regenerate or unable to complete the regeneration process. This will result in the DPF becoming clogged up and warning signs (Engine management light, DPF light and possibly the glow plug light) displayed on the vehicles dashboard. If action is not taken to regenerate the DPF, the vehicle will eventually go into Limp Mode–loss of power and cause vehicle running problems. At this stage it is not advisable to drive the vehicle as doing so could result in engine damage.

Whilst in theory these components are a great idea to reduce emissions they tend to fail due to reasons outlined above. Repair costs can be very expensive as replacements costs for a new unit can run into the £000’s for some vehicles. One solution we can offer to motorists is to have the DPF removed and its functions disabled or deleted by modifying the software in the vehicles ECU . The Process

The first step is to carry out a diagnostics of the cars DPF. This involves using dealer level diagnostics tool to check for the presence of DPF fault codes. We also carry out a back pressure test of the DPF to confirm that it is blocked. The pressure sensor will also be checked for any damage at this stage. Once we have diagnosed that the filter is blocked we proceed by removing the DPF from the vehicle. The filter is in a metal casing which is a part of the exhaust system, we remove the filter from within the casing and re-attach the DPF casing back to the exhaust system. We then carry out the necessary steps to re-programme the ECU to disable the DPF functions and also remap the car for improved performance / drivability and better fuel efficiency. Before installing the modified file we reset all the fault codes and Diesel Particulate Filter related counters which are stored in the ECU.
